Coverage characteristics

Retail trade statistics measure the sales of a wide range of businesses that provide household and personal goods and services.

Final consumption expenditure from the national accounts comprises expenditure by households, private non-profits, central and local government.




Retail trade statistics are published around seven weeks after the end of the reference quarter.

Gross domestic product is published around three months after the end of the reference quarter.

Retail trade


The value sales (excluding GST) in the retail trade sector.


Retail sales volumes expressed in September 2010 quarter prices. This is a constant price estimate which removes movement caused by price changes.



Private final consumption expenditure comprises household expenditure or outlays on consumer goods and services, and the final consumption expenditure on non-capital items of private non-profit institutions serving households.

General government

Government final consumption expenditure is the value of goods and services provided by the government sector for current consumption by the community. It includes both central and local government.
