Our Statement of Prudential Policy

Information on how we approach policy, supervision, enforcement and resolution.

Our Statement of Prudential Policy

We develop and implement prudential policy to protect and promote the stability of New Zealand’s financial system. This helps maintain public trust and confidence in our banks, insurers, non-bank deposit takers and Financial Markets Infrastructures (FMIs). It also reduces the risk of a financial crisis that could seriously damage the economy, and the prosperity and wellbeing of New Zealanders.

Our Statement of Prudential Policy (SoPP) sets out our approach to:

  • carrying out supervision
  • imposing prudential standards or requirements
  • monitoring and investigating compliance with our prudential framework
  • taking appropriate action in respect of contraventions of our prudential framework or where entities are in financial or other difficulties.

This provides transparency and promotes public awareness and understanding of how we operate under prudential legislation.
