Researching cash services in the community

We've launched the first trial of a community cash service. Our research will run for up to 12 months.

About the research

This research project, funded by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand Te Pūtea Matua, recognises the important role of cash in communities.

The research and the results of the trial will help us inform policy around cash access and how cash is used - for example how easy is it to get cash, spend it, give it as change, and deposit cash.

What has happened so far

We've completed landscape research in a number of rural locations. Litmus, an independent research company has asked locals including members of the public, community groups and business owners on our behalf about how they use cash and banking services.

What's happening now

We've launched the first trial of a community cash service. This is an important milestone and will give us valuable insights into how non-bank cash services can operate in practice and meet local needs.

What happens next

Users will be interviewed by Litmus so we can get perspectives about what worked well, what could work better, and any other views about the trial that users would like to share.

Our research will run for up to 12 months to inform future work to support cash use and the cash system.
