John McDermott

People and Technology
John leads our People and Technology Group, which enables our teams, platforms and systems to be future-focussed, resilient and equipped to deliver on our strategy.
He joined us in 2019 and has since been in various executive leadership roles within Te Pūtea Matua.
Before transitioning to his current role, he was Acting Assistant Governor/General Manager of Transformation, Innovation, People and Culture. Prior to this, he held the roles of Assistant Governor/General Manager of Digital Solutions and Security from December 2021, and Acting Assistant Governor/General Manager of Business Operations from April 2021.
John has extensive public and private sector experience in digital and cyber security strategy, capability uplift and operational leadership. This includes strategic advisory roles at the New Zealand Transport Agency, the New Zealand Fire Service, and Kiwibank.
He graduated with a Bachelor of Science majoring in Physics and Mathematics from Victoria University of Wellington.
