Maritime Mutual Insurance Association (NZ) Ltd is not a licensed insurer under the Insurance (Prudential Supervision) Act 2010, nor is it prudentially supervised by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand or any other New Zealand authority. Insurance underwritten by Maritime Mutual Insurance Association (NZ) Ltd is not available to persons in New Zealand.
In March 2012, the Reserve Bank granted an exemption to Maritime Mutual Insurance Association (NZ) Ltd to use the restricted word ‘insurance’ in its name. This was on the condition that it includes statements on its website, marketing materials and policyholder documentation that it is not a licensed insurer, does not provide insurance products to New Zealanders, and is not supervised by the Reserve Bank. Restricted words are otherwise prohibited from being used in the name of an unlicensed entity.
The conditions of the exemption were amended on 4 August 2025 to ensure that Maritime Mutual Insurance Association (NZ) Ltd's status as an unlicensed insurer is clearer to the public and to any of its customers.
