Speech on RBNZ forecasting by Chief Economist Paul Conway

Forecasting the economy is a key part of how we make monetary policy decisions at Te Pūtea Matua – the Reserve Bank of New Zealand.

Past Event
Tuesday, 15 April 2025 to Tuesday, 15 April 2025
9:30 am - 10:15 am

Every three months, we set out our outlook for the New Zealand economy, and the Official Cash Rate (OCR), over a three-year projection horizon. We always put our best foot forward with these forecasts and they tend to receive a lot of attention. But we are under no illusion that the economy will always evolve exactly as we expect. In fact, it probably won’t.

RBNZ Chief Economist Paul Conway will talk about our forecasts in general - why the Reserve Bank forecasts, the data, information and tools the RBNZ uses to guide us through economic uncertainty and to set the OCR appropriately. He will also explain what we are trying to convey when we publish the outlook for the OCR.

Mr Conway will present his 20-minute speech on Teams, which will be open to public and media. The text of the speech will be published on the RBNZ website when he begins speaking.

Those joining the call will be able to write in questions in the online chat function for a Q&A session after the speech.

Join Teams event at 9.30am Tuesday, 15 April

NB: The speech will not provide any new information about monetary policy or commentary on latest economic data.
