Christian is Assistant Governor/General Manager of Economics, Financial Markets and Banking. He is responsible for the full cycle of monetary policy formulation, implementation and maintenance of liquidity in financial markets, provision and circulation of currency, and the operation of interbank payment and settlement systems.
Prior to taking up the role in 2019, Christian was part of the team that established Harbour Asset Management, which was awarded Morningstar New Zealand Fund Manager of the Year in 2014, 2016 and 2017. As an Executive Director, Christian was a member of the executive team, headed the fixed interest business, led the firm’s macroeconomic research applied across fixed interest, equity and multi-asset portfolios, and chaired the Risk Committee.
Before this, Christian spent 9 years at the Bank of England, where he held senior positions including Private Secretary to the Deputy Governor, Chief Manager of the Sterling Markets Division and Head of Market Intelligence. During the Global Financial Crisis, he was part of the team created to resolve UK bank failures, led the scheme to restore liquidity to the sterling corporate bond market, and advised on the design of asset purchases when the Bank of England embarked on quantitative easing.
Christian is a product of Rangiora High School, graduated from the University of Canterbury with a Master of Commerce (Hons) majoring in Economics, and has attended the Harvard Business School Investment Management Workshop.
Christian commences the Assistant Governor/GM Economics, Financial Markets and Banking role on 18 March.
