Foreign Reserves Management Policy
The current statutory framework for managing New Zealand’s foreign reserves is sections 16-24 of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand Act (the ‘RBNZ Act’). This statutory framework is under review as part of the wider RBNZ Act Review (‘the Review’).
The Review is considering the objectives for New Zealand’s foreign reserves; the roles and responsibilities in relation to those reserves across the RBNZ, the MOF, and the Treasury; and the transparency and accountability arrangements that support good reserve management practices. The Reserve Bank’s policy and approach to managing the foreign reserves will evolve and adapt with the outcomes of the Review. The Reserve Bank will be publishing further details on our reserves management policy here in due course.
In the interim, more information can be found on the RBNZ Act Review page.
