Survey of expectations (M14): Change of research provider and Investigations to enhance the survey

The RBNZ is reviewing the Survey of expectations – our quarterly survey of business leaders and forecasters about their perceptions and expectations for key indicators in the New Zealand economy. Latest data was published at 3pm on Wednesday 9 August.

Change of research provider

Following a competitive procurement process, a new survey provider will run fieldwork for the Survey of Expectations from next quarter.

Survey of expectations fieldwork will be carried out by Research New Zealand – Rangahau Aotearoa from October 2023. This is a change from the current provider, The Nielsen Company. The new research provider was selected through a competitive procurement process, as the contract with the existing provider expires in September 2023.

The RBNZ will publish aggregate statistics from the Survey of expectations on 8 November 2023, in line with our Release Calendar.

To preserve the consistency of the established timeseries, there will be no immediate change to the existing panel of survey respondents, nor questionnaire changes at this stage.

Investigations to enhance the survey

We have begun investigations to broaden survey coverage and expand the sample size to increase the statistical quality of results. We will also review our survey methodology and the questions we ask respondents.

The Survey of expectations commenced in September 1987, so comparability of key long-run time series will be an important consideration before implementing any change. Research and testing for any changes will occur in parallel with the existing survey until we have confidence in the data quality and comparability of key timeseries.

We plan to conduct a public consultation to elicit feedback on our proposed approach to survey enhancements over the coming year.
