Reserve Bank closes NZ Government April 2023 nominal bond repurchase programme

The Reserve Bank has closed its offer to purchase NZ government bonds maturing 15 April 2023 for liquidity management purposes and to support the efficient functioning of the New Zealand bond market.

The offer opened on 17 October 2022 and closed at 4:00pm 20 March 2023. The Bank repurchased $1,444m of the April 2023 bond. The Reserve Bank has not on-sold any of the bonds to NZDM, and will hold the bonds on its balance sheet till maturity.

The Reserve Bank said the offer was normal ahead of a government bond maturity. These purchases will help manage the large cash inflow to the banking system on 15 April as a result of the bond maturity.

This operation was undertaken to manage near term liquidity flows and to assist in the efficient functioning of New Zealand debt markets.
