The Reserve Bank is seeking an experienced economist to join the Economics Department as an Adviser.

The Forecasting Team advises on the state and outlook for the New Zealand economy to support monetary policy decisions.

The key responsibilities of Adviser positions include providing thought leadership; making a substantial contribution to the development of policy and the Bank’s analytical frameworks; working with others to ensure the work of the Bank’s policy departments is well integrated; leading projects; providing guidance and coaching to colleagues and sharing their depth of experience; and drafting and presenting material for the Bank’s policy committees.

The Adviser leads the drafting and production of the Monetary Policy Statement. You will provide advice and analysis to the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) on current conditions, the macroeconomic outlook and monetary policy considerations.

You will lead engagement with other teams to ensure we have the best analysis to support monetary policy formulation, and to continually improve analytical frameworks and models.

You will need:

  • A post-graduate degree in economics, with a preference for open economy macroeconomics and/or macro-forecasting experience

  • At least 5 years work experience in using quantitative techniques / models to analyse macroeconomic conditions and / or produce forecasts

  • A solid understanding of macroeconomics and the key issues facing New Zealand and the global economy

  • The ability to identify policy relevant issues, shape analytical work accordingly, and influence the views of colleagues and senior managers

  • A collaborative approach that draws on the knowledge and skills of colleagues and other stakeholders, and supports the work of others

  • The ability to communicate with, inform and influence a range of audiences, verbally and in writing

  • To work effectively and efficiently within deadline
