Assets denominated in foreign currency

Current a/c advances

Foreign currency denominated current accounts, reverse repurchase and secured/unsecured short-term advances to foreign banks and financial institutions.

Foreign assets

Sundry foreign assets.

IMF holding of SDRs

SDR denominated foreign currency assets. (See IMF allocation of SDRs for further information)

Marketable securities

Foreign currency denominated sovereign and non-sovereign securities.

Prior to August 2004 short sales of bonds were netted off against the bonds in marketable securities. From August 2004 short sales are reported as liabilities denominated in foreign currency.

Assets denominated in NZ dollars

Advances to Treasury

Fixed term deposits with the Treasury. (See Reserve Bank bills for further information)

Crown settlement account

Net overdrawn balances in the Crown settlement account.

Fixed assets and inventories

Land, buildings, plant, machinery, motor vehicles and inventories.

Government securities

Government stock investment portfolio.

Other assets

Accounts receivable and sundry assets.

Other investments in New Zealand

New Zealand denominated marketable securities held for trading purposes.

Settlement institutions

Repurchase advances, secured loans, overnight advances and accrued interest owing from settlement institutions.

Total assets

The sum of the above defined foreign currency and NZ dollar assets.

Liabilities denominated in foreign currency

Current

Foreign currency denominated repurchase, secured loan and credit line financing provided by foreign counterparties.

Prior to August 2004 short sales of bonds were netted off against the bonds in marketable securities. From August 2004 short sales are reported as liabilities denominated in foreign currency.

IMF allocation of SDRs

SDR denominated financing provided by the IMF. In December 1998, SDR assets and liabilities were transferred to the Treasury. SDRs are now directly accounted for as the Crown balance sheet.

Long term

Foreign currency denominated financing provided by The Treasury (and the Earthquake Commission up to 3 June 1998).

Liabilities denominated in NZ dollars

Capital reserves

Retained earnings, revaluation reserves and current period accumulated income.

Currency in circulation

The face value of notes and coins issued into circulation.

Government

Net in funds balance in the Crown settlement and other Government accounts held at the Reserve Bank.

Other

IMF No. 1 account, other central bank accounts, staff deposits and other sundry deposits.

Other liabilities

Creditors and accounts payable.

Reserve Bank bills

Short-term discount securities issued by the Reserve Bank. The Bank ceased issuing Reserve Bank bills on 5 February 1999. All Reserve Bank bills and related advances to The Treasury were repaid by 9 April 1999.

Settlement institutions

Balances in the exchange settlement accounts held at the Reserve Bank.

Total liabilities

The sum of the above defined foreign currency and NZ dollar liabilities.
