Assets denominated in foreign currency

Current accounts and advances

Foreign currency denominated current accounts, margin accounts, reverse repurchase agreements and secured/unsecured short-term advances to foreign banks and financial institutions. The volumes reported are based on market prices and include accrued interest.

Prior to August 2004, FX Swaps were classified within current account advances, beginning August 2004, these swaps have been included as marketable securities.

Marketable securities

Foreign currency denominated sovereign and non-sovereign securities and the net value of the Reserve Bank’s derivative positions. Securities and derivatives are valued at market prices and include accrued interest. Beginning August 2004, includes net value of FX swaps.

Beginning in August 2004, additional changes were made to the composition of marketable securities. Beginning in August 2004, data exclude short sales which are now reported as liabilities denominated in foreign currency. Data also exclude the investment by the Reserve Bank in the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) which has been classified within foreign assets.

Holding of SDRs

SDR denominated foreign currency assets. (See IMF allocation of SDRs for further information). SDR holdings were transferred to the Treasury and removed from the Reserve Bank’s balance sheet in December 1998.


Other foreign assets

Sundry foreign assets and the Reserve Bank’s investment in BIS shares.

Prior to August 2004, the investment by the Reserve Bank in the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) was classified within Marketable Securities. From August 2003, this investment has been classified within foreign assets.

Assets denominated in NZ dollars

Advances to Settlement institutions

Reverse Repurchase agreements (including the Term Auction Facility (TAF) introduced in November 2008), secured loans, overnight advances and accrued interest owing from resident and non-resident settlement institutions. The volumes reported are based on market prices and include accrued interest. The TAF was discontinued in November 2009.

Crown settlement account

Overdrafts due from the Crown settlement account.

Advances to Treasury

Fixed term deposits with the Treasury. The deposits were related to the issuance of Reserve Bank bills in the 1990s. Please see Reserve Bank bills for further information.

Government securities

Government stock investment portfolio, valued at market prices and including accrued interest. Includes purchases of government securities on the secondary market.

Other investment

New Zealand dollar denominated assets held in the portfolio.

Fixed assets and inventories

Land, buildings, plant, machinery, motor vehicles and inventories net of accumulated depreciation.

Beginning in November 2009, includes the Bank's collections of currency, artworks, and archives which have been reclassified from Other Assets.  Data for prior months have not been restated due to the immateriality of the change.

Other assets

Accounts receivable, nonfinancial, and sundry assets.

Beginning in November 2009, excludes the Bank's collections of currency, artworks, and archives which have been reclassified to Fixed assets and inventories.  Data for prior months have not been restated due to the immateriality of the change.

Total assets

The sum of the above defined foreign currency and NZ dollar assets.

Liabilities denominated in foreign currency

Current liabilities

Foreign currency denominated repurchase, secured loan and credit line financing, and deposits provided by foreign counterparties plus forward purchases of foreign currency. The volumes reported are based on market prices and include accrued interest.

Prior to August 2004 short sales of bonds were netted off against the bonds in marketable securities. From August 2004 short sales are reported as liabilities denominated in foreign currency.

Long term liabilities

Foreign currency denominated financing provided by The Treasury (and the Earthquake Commission up to 3 June 1998). The volumes reported are based on market prices and include accrued interest.

Allocation of SDRs

The initial allocation of Special Drawing Rights by the International Monetary Fund. In December 1998, SDR assets and liabilities were transferred to the Treasury. SDRs are now directly accounted for as the Crown balance sheet.

Liabilities denominated in NZ dollars

Reserve Bank bills

Short-term discount securities issued by the Reserve Bank. The Bank ceased issuing Reserve Bank bills on 5 February 1999. All Reserve Bank bills and related advances to The Treasury were repaid by 9 April 1999. Reserve Bank Bills were reintroduced in November 2008 and discontinued in November 2009.

Government Deposits

Net in funds balance in the Crown settlement and other Government accounts held at the Reserve Bank including accrued interest.

Settlement institutions Deposits

Repurchase agreements and exchange settlement account balances of resident and non-resident settlement institutions held at the Reserve Bank, including accrued interest.

Other Deposits

IMF No. 1 account, and deposits from central banks, RBNZ staff, and other sundry deposits in NZ Dollars.

Currency in circulation

The face value of notes and coins issued into circulation, including collector’s currency.

Other liabilities

Creditors and accounts payable. Includes demonitised notes and coins and provisions for dividends payable to the government.

Capital and reserves

Capital, retained earnings, general and special reserves, valuation adjustments, and current period accumulated income.

Total liabilities

The sum of the above defined foreign currency and NZ dollar liabilities.
