Survey notes for table C17

Chronology of changes to tables and current status

Registered bank SSR.

Since December 2004, the Bank has disseminated a monthly survey of registered banks. Released one month after the reporting period, the aggregate survey tables include a stylised breakdown of total assets and liabilities, as well as a breakdown of funding (borrowing) and claims (lending) by "time to rate reset" and by sector.

Series breaks

Series breaks occur when registered bank data are affected by survey changes that are not 'organic' but arise from one period to another because of factors such as the introduction of a new bank to the survey; a bank relinquishing its registration; the sale of assets; merger with another institution or a change in substance in business practice that interrupts a 'like for like' time series comparison (eg simultaneous repayment of loans to one funder, to be replaced by another in a change in business practice).

Series breaks for key balance sheet components are displayed in the panel below.

Series breaks that occur in loan categories and 'All other assets', less any counterpart funding to securitised assets in table C6 series, add to 'Total assets'(A15).

October 2008: New respondent included in registered bank aggregates

On 7 October 2008 a new bank was registered. From October 2008 this bank appears in the registered bank SSR aggregates. Prior to October the respondent was included in the NBLI survey. Its registration as a bank has resulted in series breaks in both the registered bank and NBLI SSRs and series produced from them. The table below summarises the series breaks which relate to the registered bank SSR aggregates only.

June 2008: Household deposits at registered banks

Market monitoring of monthly household deposit data, prior to December 2004, was possible from either the ‘M3 aggregate SSR’ (in Part D) or table C8. Publication of updated data ceased as at November 2004. From December 2004, a new registered bank aggregate SSR was disseminated on the web site. To assist with monitoring household deposit growth, registered bank household deposit data and growth rates from December 1998 are available in table C17 household deposits.

December 2006: Household deposits at registered banks

The registered bank household deposit series was substantially revised at the time December 2006 data was released following receipt of improved household deposit statistics.

September 2006: Series break

A respondent was reclassified from a registered bank to the non-bank lending institution (NBLI) survey. The impact on the aggregates is shown in Table 1 above.

March 2006: Series break

Housing assets were reclassified from a registered bank to the quarterly Managed Funds Survey (MFS). The impact on the aggregates is shown in Table 1.

December 2004: New survey introduced for registered banks

Dissemination of the 'Aggregate M3 Standard Statistical Return (SSR)' was discontinued, with the latest aggregate M3 SSR available as at the end of November 2004. Publication was discontinued for statistical and confidentiality reasons. There is no effect on the money and credit aggregate series, which continues in tables C1 - C4.
