Household financial assets, liabilities and housing values: annual series 1978 to 2006
The annual release on 31 May 2007 of these December year statistics includes the following changes from the previous year.
New Series
A new table 3, ‘Household deposits and other financial assets’, is provided, with financial assets presented on an institutional basis.
The previous table showing household liabilities from 1998 to 2005 has been recast to present housing and consumer loans by institutional group (table 4, ‘Housing and consumer loans outstanding by institutional group’).
A new table 6, ‘Equities directly and indirectly held by households’ is provided, displaying in greater detail the composition of the equities data shown in table 1.
Revisions
The upward revision to household disposable income released by Statistics New Zealand on 8 May 2007 has been incorporated.
A significant downward revision has been made in the aggregate level of deposits from 1987 to 1997, explained in the series notes.
Student loans for 2005 have been revised following a methodological change adopted for the purposes of this annual statistical series (explained in the series notes).
Equities overseas held directly by households incorporate a revision to the December 2004 data published by Statistics New Zealand. For 2005 and 2006, a methodological change to the estimation procedure has been used by the Bank (explained in the series notes).
