Integrity

Dissemination of terms and conditions under which official statistics are produced, including confidentiality of individual responses

Data is collected under Section 36 of The Reserve Bank of New Zealand Act 1989 (The Act).

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand publishes only aggregated data. Individual institutional data is confidential.

This data was first compiled and published in the December 1986 issue of the Reserve Bank Bulletin.

Information about data sources and the evolution of agriculture credit statistics is available in the June 2002 Reserve Bank Bulletin.

Dissemination of statistics that support statistical cross-check and provide assurance of reasonableness

Table S7 Aggregate Standard Statistical Return (SSR) for registered banks provides monthly data on registered bank agriculture credit.

Annual agriculture credit statistics data was first compiled and published in December 1986 issue of the Reserve Bank Bulletin. Information about data sources and the evolution of agriculture credit statistics is available in the June 2002 issue of the Bulletin.

All data from 2003 onwards is sourced from the RBNZ Annual Agriculture Survey.

Definitions: Annual Agriculture Statistics

Floating rate

Loans that are fixed for less than 90 days; revolving or overdraft are included in floating rate loans.

Fixed rate

Loans that are fixed for more than 90 days are included in the fixed term loans. Additionally, some banks offer short-term (floating) interest rate loans that have 'swaps' against them. These loans are fixed for a chosen term and price. These loans are included in the fixed term loans.

Agribusiness

The value of credit extended by registered banks to non-farm businesses associated with the production, processing, and distribution of agricultural outputs. The usual practice of registered banks is to consider credit to these businesses as 'agribusiness' credit, and the values reported have been obtained by the RBNZ after consultation with respondents. This definition excludes, for example, businesses that manufacture products or equipment for farm use.

Industry Breakdown

Industry codes are based on an ANZSIC 2006 basis, and show the value of credit extended by registered banks to different subsectors of the agriculture industry.

The Reserve Bank has been working with the registered banks since mid-2015 to develop a new registered bank balance sheet collection that will replace the Annual Agriculture Credit Survey. Data from the Annual Agriculture Credit Survey published in C26, C27, and C28 have been released for the last time as at 30 June 2016.

C26

Agriculture credit by registered banks – fixed and floating ($million)

C27

Agriculture credit by registered banks – detailed industry breakdown ($millions)

C28

Agribusiness by registered banks ($millions)

In 2017 we will publish more frequent statistics providing more timely insights into agriculture sector credit activity from the new registered bank balance sheet collection.
