RBNZ hosts SEANZA Central Banking Course
The Reserve Bank of New Zealand is next month to host a three week training programme for central bank staff from, predominantly, the Asia Pacific Region.
The gathering is to take place from 1 November to 20 November in Wellington and Taupo.
The 28 attendees will mainly be mid-level central bank staff, from the so-called SEANZA countries, i.e. Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Thailand, as well as New Zealand.
The acronym SEANZA comes from the words South East Asia, New Zealand and Australia, and refers to a series of regular Asia Pacific central banking educational exchanges that began in 1957. Since then the number of participating countries has expanded markedly.
Central bank staff from the US, the UK, Canada, Germany and some Pacific Island states will also attend.
Subjects covered are wide-ranging, with the main emphasis being on monetary policy and bank supervision. A particular highlight is expected to be an address by Federal Reserve Board Governor Laurence Meyer, at the course's conclusion.
The objectives of these SEANZA courses are:
- to assist in the development and training of senior officers for higher central banking executive positions;
- to build up knowledge of central banking, with particular reference to conditions in the SEANZA countries;
- to promote understanding of the problems of developing countries; and
- to foster friendly relations and technical co-operation among central banks in the SEANZA region.
SEANZA courses are held every two years and are hosted in rotation by member countries.
