Graduate Recruitment

Applications for 2008/09 are now closed – please check this webpage in early 2009 for the 2009/2010 programme.

Working at the Reserve Bank

Most of our graduate economists join the Reserve Bank’s Economics department. Here they focus on macroeconomic forecasting, policy modelling, research and analysis, and external communications.

Or there’s the Financial Markets Department, which conducts the Bank's business in the financial markets and reports on the stability of the financial system. You could be monitoring and analysing domestic and international financial markets, managing New Zealand's foreign reserves by trading in offshore financial markets, dealing in the domestic markets to make sure that there is sufficient liquidity floating around the NZ banking system, working to ensure that the risks arising from department's operations are managed appropriately,  or contributing to the Bank's Financial Stability Report.

The Prudential Supervision Department takes graduates with economics, finance or law degrees, and they could undertake research or help to develop New Zealand's banking and non-bank deposit taking supervisory framework or advising on the structure, regulation and operation of the New Zealand financial system.

The Bank also promotes a rotation policy, which means that graduates initially join one department, but often move around and between departments to benefit from a variety of roles.

Wherever you start your Reserve Bank career, rest assured that you’ll be learning about financial markets and how different sectors of the economy interact. With fast-developing technical and analytical skills, you will soon be converting your economic analysis skills into practical policy advice. So expect exposure early on to issues with direct impact on the Bank's core responsibilities, including advising senior decision-makers.

We’re not your typical bank. What we hear most often from our new graduates is how surprised they are by the relaxed and upbeat atmosphere here. Be prepared to play as hard as you work. There’s always something happening, with functions, sports and constant social goings-on.

What we’re looking for

You’ll be at least an Honours level graduate, and have a strong interest in – and an advanced knowledge of – economics and/or finance. Ideally you’ll be a Macroeconomics, Monetary Economics, Finance, Applied Econometrics, International Economics or Public Economics graduate. Curious, analytical and a critical thinker, you’ll be a great team player, have strong written and oral English and have superb interpersonal and communication skills. And you won’t be backwards in coming forwards, with an ability to express your views confidently – even rigorously.

Our graduates are diverse in their backgrounds and interests. As an equal opportunities employer, we’d like to hear from you if this sounds like you.

We welcome applications from international students, provided you are legally entitled to work in New Zealand

University visits and the selection process

The Reserve Bank takes a different approach from the usual campus presentations. Instead we will be visiting universities in March to have an informal chat with 3rd and 4th year students over coffee.

Following the application closing date, we interview the shortlisted applicants on campus. These interviews usually occur in May.

From here, selected applicants are invited to the Bank for a second interview during July. Employment offers for graduate positions are normally made in July. Employment offers for summer positions are normally made in June after the campus interviews in May.

Campus Visits Timetable

Our graduate recruitment team visit the following universities during March each year:

  • Auckland University
  • Waikato University
  • Victoria University
  • Canterbury University
  • Otago University

Massey Albany students are invited to attend the campus visit at Auckland University, Lincoln students are invited to Canterbury, and Massey Palmerston & Massey Wellington are invited to attend a visit at the Reserve Bank.
