background

I'm from Auckland originally and I studied economics and marketing at the University of Auckland (I also studied law for three years until I realised that I didn't actually like it). The papers I chose gave me a rounding in analysis and research of economic data as well as the ability to use my findings in applied situations. While I was studying I also tutored and lectured part time in economics. I really enjoyed it as it gave chance to meet and work with a lot of new people.

Personal interests, goals

When I get the chance, I really enjoy drawing and painting. Since joining the Bank I've taken a number of art classes, which is something I always wanted to do but never had time for when I was studying. I also spend a lot of time drinking coffee and hanging out in cafes. I one day hope to have a house by the beach and a cat.

what attracted you to the Bank?

After studying for five years, I really wanted to work in an environment where I was in touch with what was actually happening in the economy. Working at the Bank has given me the opportunity to explore a number of issues important to the New Zealand economy as well as providing experience in range of areas.

experience/achievements at the Bank

Working at the Bank has given me a lot of chances for learning and development. I'm part of the Forecasting team, but I get to work with a number of different people and groups. This has allowed me to examine a wide range of issues. In my first project for the Bank, I spent a lot of time examining the accuracy of the Bank's forecasts and considering how they differ from those in the private sector. I've also looked at monetary policy transmission mechanisms in New Zealand and Australia. My more recent work looked at issues related to surveys of expectations. In all my projects the Bank has given me a lot of independence and responsibility but also provided me support and training.

what have you enjoyed/found satisfying or challenging?

I really like the fact that I'm not locked into monotonous or repetitive work processes. I'm given the opportunity to work on projects that interest me and in a range of areas.

I also feel my work is valued by those in and outside the Bank. It was great to know that despite being new, I would be given the chance to work on projects important to the operation of the Bank and that people were interested in my views.

future aspirations

I'm currently trying to deepen my knowledge of the New Zealand and international economies, and eventually I'd like to manage projects for the Bank.   Also, I hope to one day have a house by the beach and a cat.
