Graduate Profiles

Anne Mahon

background
I'm originally from Hamilton and after school moved to Palmerston North to study at Massey University. Straight out of school I wasn't really sure what direction I wanted to head to in the future so I kept my options open and completed a double degree in Science and Business Studies, majoring in Economics and Chemistry. It took a while but I finally decided I was more interested in pursuing a career in economics so I went back and completed my honours year in Economics in 2002.
personal interests, goals
I'd definitely promote living in Wellington, it's a great city. There's always so much to see and do and the shopping is fantastic! Outside work I enjoy sampling a variety of eating establishments around the city, going to shows, dance classes, playing netball and skiing.
what attracted you to the Bank?
While I was definitely attracted to the chance to use some of the skills I learned at varsity as well as learn many more (though perhaps not in the chemistry field!) I was also attracted to the relaxed, fun and friendly working environment. Since I've been at the Bank I've really enjoyed the chance to get directly involved in the policy process very quickly, as well as the opportunity to work on a variety of interesting and challenging projects.
experience/achievements at the Bank
When I joined the bank I joined the international/issues ream and took on the role of monitoring the international economy. This role meant that I presented weekly at MPC and was also tied into the forecast process. Recently I've been taking on a more of a research role, and have been enjoying that too.
Other random things I've been fortunate enough to be involved in while working at the bank include judging the Monetary Policy Challenge (a competition we run for secondary school students); conducting graduate recruitment interviews; being secretary for the Monetary Policy Committee; and going on business visits.

future aspirations
I'm really not much of a long term planner, but I'd like to live and work overseas at some stage. More generally, I just aim to continue learning and enjoying what I'm doing.
