Introduction
MoPoS is a computer game which simulates the problems faced by a central bank, such as the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ). In MoPoS, the player controls the interest rate, just like the Governor of the RBNZ. Every quarter, you must raise, lower, or keep interest rates the same in an effort to keep inflation between zero and three per cent. Via four graphs, you are provided with information about current and past inflation, GDP, and interest rates to help with decision-making. But, MoPoS players be warned! The game is monitoring your performance - if annual inflation goes under zero per cent or above three per cent, the game's face shows displeasure. You may even be fired as Governor!
Note to users of MoPoS
Background knowledge of monetary policy is not absolutely necessary to play the game. However, MoPoS users, such as Economics students, will gain more if the game is combined with a teaching unit on monetary policy. The game has been developed as an interactive and fun learning tool, designed specifically to encourage understanding of monetary policy.
The game's model economy is not based on any particular country, ie it is not specific to New Zealand. The Reserve Bank does not use this model in its monetary policy decision-making or in its forecasting.
