Grant Spencer was appointed Deputy Governor and Head of Financial Stability in February 2007, and took up this role in April 2007.
The Financial Stability Department is responsible for formulating and implementing public policy to promote and maintain a sound and efficient financial system. Major functions include foreign reserves, domestic liquidity management, analysis of financial markets and institutions, and developing and implementing public policy regarding financial institutions.
Grant’s previous positions include:
- Reserve Bank of New Zealand: Assistant Governor and Head of Economics (2004 – 2007)
- Australia and New Zealand Banking Group: Head of Strategy and Business Development (NZ) (2003 – 2004); Executive Manager for Group Strategy (1998 – 2003); New Zealand Treasurer for ANZ Investment Bank, (1995 – 1998)
- Reserve Bank of New Zealand: Chief Manager, Financial Markets Department (1993 – 1995)
- International Monetary Fund: Special Advisor, European II Dept (1992 – 1993), Alternate Executive Director (1990 – 1991)
- Reserve Bank of New Zealand: Chief Manager, Economics Department (1985 - 1990)
Grant has spent time as a Non Executive Director of the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research, a Council member and Vice President of the New Zealand Association of Economists, and a Council member of the New Zealand Corporate Treasurers Association.
Grant holds a BA(Hons) in Economics and Information Science from Victoria University, and an M.Sc in Econometrics and Mathematical Economics from the London School of Economics and Political Science.
Grant is married to Lynda. They have two children, Hanna and Nicolette. He enjoys golf, skiing, bush walking and cycling.
